The Kingdom of Okokus!

First of all, I apologize about this picture. It was hard to get a decent one with a phone because of the way the sun was shining through the clouds. It created some weird glare, but it was the best one out of all the ones I took!

This food truck is always in Reidsville, NC, according to the owner at this exact location. We ran into them after we had just left the hospital right up the street. I was so happy to see a food truck in a small town, at that very moment because we were starving! You can take a look at them on Facebook.

Now, it looks like this food truck is new, but when I was looking on their Facebook page I found a restaurant that looks to be associated with this food truck. The earliest post I could find was from June 2020, with no website, only a URL that leads you to a menu.

I have said this before, I think it is great that small businesses were still emerging during a pandemic and it shows drive and determination. I wish only the best for these small businesses. I also hope they are willing to take in constructive criticism, that in turn, will help them grow and retain more customers.

You can probably already tell by my tone, that I was not impressed with this food truck. Eli and I love Japanese food. This food truck advertises themself as a Japanese food truck, but on their menu, they also have Mexican food. We thought that was awesome they have 2 types of food, but at the same time, it is a weird combination as food trucks usually stick to one kind of food.

Eli ordered the steak and shrimp with chicken and extra rice (in another container not pictured). They give you an option if you want the veggies mixed in and like I have said before, Eli does not like rabbit food so he opted out. The one word that explains everything, plain. This is not because there were no veggies added. The rice had no flavor. The chicken was dry. The steak and shrimp were cooked fine but it was really nothing special. One thing was for sure, even though Japanese cooking uses a lot of soy sauce, which is naturally salty, the meat definitely lacked that seasoning.

I and my daughter, ordered the chicken combo with veggies and noodles with half rice. I found it odd that the carrots were not incorporated into the rest of the mixture. These carrots actually were boiled and tasted very sweet (more than what their natural flavor gives off). I did like the veggies, especially the mushrooms because I felt they absorbed that good soy sauce flavor. I also did like how they served the white sauce in the bigger plastic cubs (not those little ones where you can dip 2 things and it's all gone). The noodles, again, plain. I feel if they had some veggies it would have taken it up a notch. My daughter on the other hand, liked them and would definitely eat them again.

We ordered 2 things of wontons (comes in pack of 4). We love wontons. I thought these ones were good and fun. They aren't your normal looking ones with the 4 corners. These are triangles and I feel because of the way they folded them, they were stuffed more with cream cheese (there is onion in them too....shh don't tell Eli lol)! I don't like it when there is a pea size of cream cheese stuffing. This one, when you took a bite was oozing with cream cheese! Now I eat wontons all in one sitting because I don't like them reheated because they lose their crisp. These ones were fresh, so they were nice and crispy!

The last thing was a quesadilla. This one had chicken and cheese and for some odd reason, my husband told them yes to lettuce (please don't put lettuce in your quesadilla)! He was asked if he wanted onions or lettuce. He said no onions, which there weren't. He said lettuce was fine, but we thought that would be on the side (my mistake for not asking and only assuming). It was not super cheesy, which I like. My son said it was plain. I actually liked it. It had shredded chicken, which I felt was more juicy than our other meals. On the side, they do serve it with tomatillo sauce and a red sauce. Both have spice to it, which I liked. However, the red sauce seemed mayonnaise based because of the light red color and the consistency (normally tomatoes give off a bright red and dried chili peppers give off a dark red). I would be very impressed if the green sauce was actually made in-house but I could not tell based off taste.

Out of everything we ordered, the quesadilla was my favorite and the wontons were Eli's favorite. You see, when we go to food trucks, we want to be blown away. Food trucks are the way of the future and we feel that these dishes can be found anywhere, which takes away from the unique flavor and food that food trucks normally bring.

I will also add, I think the prices were fair for a food truck and the wait time was not long (but that also makes me question what is fresh). I did take a look at other Mexican food items that are on their menu, from other customers that have ordered it, and they look good. I will try them again, but next time I will focus on their Mexican food (I have a feeling it will be better). As for customer service wise, it wasn't there. A "hi" when the window was opened and then a "it'll be 15 mins" and close window. #foodtruckmania
