That's Too Random...

Updated: Jan 7, 2021

Over the weekend we had another visit to our small town. I first want to give a shout out to Hell on Horsecreek Brewing, for arranging food trucks to come to downtown Madison every Sunday! On Sunday, almost everything in this town is closed, so it is a nice treat to have different food trucks coming weekly to livin' it up!

Too Random: A Street Food Experience is a newer food truck, according to their Facebook page. It looks like the menu is always changing, hence the name Too Random, which I feel can be both good and bad. But I do want to say, bravo for getting a business up and running during a pandemic! To me, that shows how much drive and determination you have to succeed.

Now let's get onto the good stuff. I always do as much research I can before I try a food truck because here in NC, the health department gives you sanitation and food safety ratings. Me personally I will not eat at any place that is below a 90% because I have a very sensitive stomach and I cant risk the chance of getting sick. Too Random has a 99% so we are all good there! The other reason why I do research is because I want to know who they are and where they come from? What are people already saying about them and is it fair? How did they get started and do they have a signature dish?

I really like the story Too Random has about making a cinnamon bun, it got me really excited to try them. I absolutely love cinnamon rolls but I am picky when it comes to the icing because some people use cream cheese in theirs, and I am not a big cream cheese icing type of girl (I prefer cream cheese for my bagel) :) Lucky for me, their icing is not cream cheese based! It is a little thick, but that's ok. This cinnamon bun was fresh out of the oven! I could smell them cooking...but it smelled like apple pie! Plus I swear, there was an apple pie hint to this cinnamon bun, so I love the mystery it had. Another thing I loved was how it is full of cinnamon flavor! I don't think I had time to breath because I demolished this thing in a minute! The only downside was, the outside was a little hard, which is not unusual for an end piece on anything baked but I feel if the icing was poured over the cinnamon bun while it was still hot and had time to soak in, it would have been a little softer (but that's just my suggestion because that's how I do it).

Their prices really aren't bad. I actually feel they are a little cheap for a food truck. We ordered 4 things and spent about $40 plus tip. The portion size is not big, but for me that's fine because I eat like a bird however, for my husband, he said he was still hungry afterwards.

Up first, Korean BBQ Smoked Sausage. Our first thought.... it is small and why does it look like a hot dog? We don't have a lot of experience with Korean food, but I will say this dish had an American twist on it because it reminded me of a spicy hot dog. Yes, there was some spice in it so, if you have any sort of spicy sensitivities, you might not want to eat this. The melted cheese in the middle was a nice twist and I am glad they toasted the bun ( I don't like soggy food). We were pleased with the taste, but not pleased with how small it was.

Fried fish and hand cut fries. Let's talk about the fries first. They are a little dark, indicating that the oil needs to be changed or that they have been doubled fried. Basing off the taste and texture, the oil needs changed. They were crispy fries, they were soft (I prefer crispy, my husband likes them on the softer side). They did not have a lot of salt ( I like a lot of salt on my fries so much so that my kids think I am obsessed with salty things!). The only ones I ate were the ones that had the skin on the back side because those had more of the salt and a little more crunch to them. My husband loved the fries, and he ate them all up (this is why both of us taste the food so you can see how 2 different people can have 2 different opinions). My husband is usually the picky one though lol.

As for the fried fish....it was too salty for me! I know, I am crazy because I was just saying how the fries were not salty enough! It was a typical white fish filet. It was not crispy ( I like fried things crispy) but it also was not over fried, which is good so you don't have those rock hard meat ends that you can't even eat. Another thing I would add about the fish is there was no tartar sauce served on the side, nor were we asked if we wanted any. We did not end up eating it all because we just were not a fan of the fish.

The last thing we tried was the BBQ Chicken Wrap. We won't talk about the fries again because it looks like they came from the same batch. My husband did not try the wrap...he is not a fan of what he calls "rabbit food" aka greens. My daughter tried this one with me. My daughter thought it was too full of mixed greens ( I don't necessarily agree with that). We did agree that we would have liked either some onions or even tomatoes in it as well just to give it more flavor besides the bbq. The chicken was not overcooked but I don't think there was anything bbq about the wrap besides the bbq sauce that they add inside the wrap. I actually think the bbq sauce could have been toned down a bit, but I don't want to say to add ranch like everyone and their mom does. I think it would have been better if the mixed greens and chicken were tossed in the bbq sauce first and put in the wrap after to evenly distribute the sauce and the flavor it gives.

I do feel we are a little....disappointed in the food we ordered here but I don't feel we are being overly critical in the review because there are good things to every dish. Like I said earlier, it looks like this is a newer food truck, so they could be still figuring out their knack. I will definitely try them again, if they have different items on the menu...if not, I will order another cinnamon bun! #foodtruckmania

Overall rating.....
